“FARMERS UNITED”

The American Soybean Association eagerly kicked off our fiscal year 2003 “Farmers United” Membership Campaign, October 1, 2002. ASA is gearing up for an extraordinary year in membership. We want to spread the good news to every U.S. soybean grower how it will benefit them to join ASA.

UNITED IN SUCCESS

Members of the American Soybean Association are soybean growers who only want the best for all U.S. soybean operations. We support what we sell – soybeans!

UNITED IN EXPERIENCE

For more than 80 years, ASA, a non-profit grassroots organization, has been the only voice speaking in Washington, D.C., on behalf of soybeans.

UNITED IN VOICE

Membership provides clout and credibility to our organization. Members equal votes to legislators. It benefits all U.S. soybean growers to unite in voice on issues vital to our business. ASA is fighting right now for soybean growers on issues such as biodiesel, transportation and trade.

  1. Biodiesel is the most crucial issue for soybean growers right now. Soybean-based biodiesel will move large surpluses of soybean oil off the market, bringing higher prices for soybeans and more money into growers’ pockets. Farmer members at ASA are advancing legislation to dramatically expand this market.
  2. Another key issue this year for ASA is transportation. More than 75 percent of U.S. soybean exports move on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois River systems. However, our lock and dam system is antiquated and deteriorating at an alarming rate. Our competitors are making investments in their waterway transportation systems, while the U.S. continues to study. ASA supports the expansion of locks and dams in these systems, NOW.
  3. This past year, ASA focused on trade. With the support of more than 25,000 members, ASA worked hard to get Trade Promotion Authority signed into law. This critical negotiating tool will make U.S. soybean exports more competitive. However, lower tariffs are still needed on soybean and soybean products in many countries. ASA memberships will help tear down these trade barriers.

UNITED IN LEADERSHIP

Membership numbers provide representation on a state level, also. ASA dues include membership to one of 29 affiliated state associations. State Associations form the policy arm of ASA. Members elect state level directors and officers to develop and implement policies and conduct in-state legislative programs. They also elect voting delegates. These delegates meet annually to adopt resolutions that set ASA policies. Members then elect ASA directors to steer these policies to the forefront of Washington, D.C.
