City Buses Burning Cleaner in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

(March, 2001) The transit authority in Cedar Rapids, Iowa has begun fueling its fleet of 60 city buses with biodiesel, a clean-burning alternative fuel that can be made from any fat or oil.  The move will help clean up the exhaust of the buses while contributing to the local farm economy.

Five Seasons Transportation and Parking (FST&P) is using B20 (20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel).  The company joins the ranks of more than 50 other major fleets throughout the U.S. using biodiesel.

"Part of the reason behind the decision to use soy-based biodiesel is that we're always concerned about emissions, and this helps us help the environment," said maintenance manager Roger Hageman.  "We are very conscientious about supporting Iowa's farmers, and using B20 will benefit them while decreasing our dependence on foreign oil."

FST&P made the announcement at a news conference attended by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), State Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge, and Cedar Rapids Mayor Lee Clancey.
