L.L. BEAN, FREEPORT, ME
L.L. Bean, headquartered in Freeport, Maine, converted its heavy-duty truck fleet to biodiesel blends in 2003. Today, 30 percent of the fuel consumed in its tractor-trailer fleet is biodiesel. Biodiesel is also used in the company's fleet of buses. In 2009, the company used nearly 14,000 gallons of biodiesel, mostly B20.
"In support of our company values, L.L. Bean continues to focus on natural environment stewardship," said Kyle Frost, Assistant Manager fo Operations for L.L. Bean. " In 2009, 30 percent of the fuel consumed in our tractor-trailer fleet, as well as the Outdoor Discovery mini-school buses, was a form of biodiesel. Biodiesel consumption is one of several of our transportation and alternative fuel programs that is a reflection of our commitment to the community and the environment."
In 2008, L.L. Bean began adding hybrid gas/electric vehicles to its fleet. The company continues to review alternative fuel trends and monitor the market for commercial-grade alterantive fuel vehicles.
In 2008, L.L. Bean created ECOBean, an Employee Commuting Options program, to help employees address concerns such as environmental impact and the rising costs of fuel. The company partnered with Go Maine, a Maine state database, to help match those who wish to carpool. Employees who carpool also enjoy designated parking spaces at L.L. Bean office complexes in Maine.
